  • Newly released data from the 2021 census shows that there were significant changes in the make-up of people living in the private rental sector in the last decade.

  • There was a 17% jump in the proportion of private sector renters working in higher managerial and professional occupations, and today they make up almost one in six.

  • The proportion of private sector renters who own small businesses rose by 30% since 2011 – and there were over 660,000 at the latest count.

  • Renting is becoming a more popular lifestyle choice in the UK and new providers are entering the market to meet the rising demand. Source: Dataloft, Census 2021, Census 2011
